Hopkins Conte Digestive Diseases Basic and Translational Research Core Center

Center Theme:

Regulation of epithelial function, especially via changes in signal transduction, trafficking and development
The goal is to advance basic and translational GI research at Hopkins and to encourage further interactions among the members of our research base in both types of studies.

Our Mission
The goal of this Center is to advance basic and translational GI research at Hopkins and to encourage further interactions among the members of our research base in both classes of research.

Regulation of epithelial function, especially via changes in signal transduction, trafficking and development.

Areas of emphasis:
I. Epithelial Transporter Function and Regulation;
II.  Inflammation, Injury and Fibrosis in:

  1. Infectious diarrheal diseases-mechanisms of bacterial enterotoxin action
  2. IBD-proteomics, gene expression and microRNAs
  3. Fatty liver, inflammation, fibrosis
  4. Obesity, immunity.

III. GI Malignancy:

  1. Epigenetics and colon cancer
  2. Epigenetics and pancreatic cancer
  3. Epigenetics and Barrett’s esophagus
  4. Hepatic cancer
  5. Translational Aspects of  Advanced Imaging.
  1. Administrative Core
  2. Proteomics Core
  3. Imaging Core including two photon microscopy, confocal microscopy with FRAP, FRET, TIRF microscopy, EM, computerized fluorometers, single cell  quantitative imaging, laser capture microscopy.
  4. Integrated Physiology Core including human and mouse genotyping, histology, animal husbandry, metabolic cages, cytokine multiplex analyses, Ussing Chamber/voltage clamp studies for resistance, permeability, ion flux measurements.
  5. Translational Research Enhancement Core-clinical data base, specimen collection for DNA, RNA, specimen procurement.
